Hurricane Sandy 10/29/12

Hurricane Sandy is approaching and although she is still out over the ocean the conditions here are not good. I can't believe they raised the wind speeds overnight, usually they lower them whether it is a snow storm or rain storm. I go to bed and the news will say something like 4" of rain and when I wake up they say 2" of rain. Not this time, it went up and not the rain but the wind. I went to bed with the news saying to expect 80mph wind speeds and I wake up to them saying to expect 90 mph wind speed later on tonight.  There are already over 2,000 without power and as I said, the hurricane isn't even here yet.

You know what is odd about this storm? The timing of it. If you remember last year at this time we had another storm and lost power. (That is why I have a generator now, not going through that with no generator). One year ago, to the day, we had Storm Albert which crippled the state for days and we were without power for a few days. This year we have Sandy. Well, at least they can't say the east coast is guilty of sexual discrimination when it comes to our storms! LOL

I just pray everyone up and down the coast stays safe. My thoughts and prayers are with you all as we go through this and I hope to see you at the other end. It will be a rough few days but we can do it...just stay safe.

Welcome to the Orange Blog Hop!

Welcome to the Third Annual Fiskateers ORANGE Blog Hop!  If you're hopping along, you should have come from Debby #2852.  (If you are joining us in the middle, go to www.fiskateers.com to start from the beginning.)  

Today we are celebrating Fiskars' signature color, ORANGE.  Almost everyone is familiar with Fiskars' famous orange-handled scissors, but Fiskars makes so many other wonderful products for crafting, sewing, gardening, and more.  Each stop along our Hop will feature different Fiskars' products with a big helping of ORANGE!  

Here is Happy 10,000 (Fiskateers have over 10,000 members!) I made with just a few of the Fiskars products for crafting, sewing, and gardening. 

For my project I made a fall Fisk-a-day Day Card and of course used lots of ORANGE. 

I Know this picture is really bad and I apologize but my house just does not have any good lighting and I couldn't get directly over it so I had some Keystone Distortion which I tried to correct in my photo program. I found out the hard way that you can not use that on a card. Why? Look at the left side of the card (right side does it also but not as bad because of where I was standing) not the ORANGE but the BLACK and see how in the middle it like pulls in. Almost looks like it was cut curved inward in the middle. I assure you it is not really cut that way and the card is actually laying flat and the sides are really straight. I need to work on my lighting in here. (Hey, bet you didn't think you were going to get a lesson in photo editing and what NOT to do....LOL)

I started by cutting a card base out of ORANGE paper and then I took a piece of Glossy Paper not photo paper because that won't work, I know....I tried. I really don't know the name of it (my guess is "Glossy Paper") but the only place I can get it is from Stampin Up. I had a stamp of the background trees which I stamped on using Memento Tuxedo Black Ink. Then I took out my Fiskars Cloud Punch and punched 5 of them. I used these as a mask. Then I used a makeup sponge and blotted Stampin Up Marina Mist Ink at the top, Cherry Cobbler and Daffodil Delight in the sky and paid special attention to make sure I did the clouds well. I used Crumb Cake for the ground. Once that was done I took the clouds off and cleaned off the glue. Then I used my Copic Markers to give the clouds some depth and highlights. I also used them to add the color to the colored leaves that fell off the trees and some grass on top of the ground. Then I used my Fiskars Tree Punch and punched 2 trees which I put through my Fiskars Crimper. I used my Copic Markers to color this tree brown and glue dots and stuck the two trees together and then glued it on my card. 

I used some Creative Paperclay and made a leaf pile that goes around the trunk of the tree. Once it dried I glued it down with Glossy Accents and I used the Copics to give the leaf pile color. At this point I matted it on black and glued it to my card base. I then used my Fiskars Nutty Border Punch on white paper which I colored brown with the Copics. This is so I could use the 'debre' acorns in the leaf pile. I glued them down with Glossy Accents also. (I also used it on black paper which went on the bottom of the card.) I cut out a rake (I know it looks like a shovel but it is suppose to be a rake) and glued it on the leaf pile in a way to look like someone leaned it against the tree and it fell onto the leaves.

I glued down my bottom border, used the computer for the sentiments and then used a couple of small, detailed plant-type stamps with Memento Cottage Ivy Ink (used scrap paper so no ink went where I didn't want it) on each side of the leaf pile.

The Little Man in My Life

I did this page on the Fiskateers site. We scraplifted a great layout by Heather and it sort of reminded me of a Tim Holtz-like style. (What is that style called anyways? Steampunk? I always call it "Tim Holtz Style".) There is a lot of distress ink and stickles and naturally his stamps and papers including the Kraft Glassine.

This is the little man in my life, my newest grandson, Damien.

Fiskars punches used were "Kaleidoscope" Border and "Love Takes Flight".

Other Fiskars products used were stamps, stamp press, scissors and cutter. 

Aren't these the cutest? It took a lot of trial and error to make them. I knew I wanted baby shoes and of course had none in stamps or even on my Cricut Cartridges so I found a clipart of baby shoes, printed it and cut it out. I used Adirondack "Metallic Acrylic Paint (Copper) as the base coat. Then took a Sharpie pen and drew the details back on the shoes, once it dried I used Glam (Bon Bon) over that, drew the details back, then before it dried completely I finished it off with Glossy Accents but I 'brushed up' parts of it where it would be worn or scuffed. 

The camera is a stamp and I added some Distressed Stickles (Black Soot) and of course Glossy Accents for the lens.

 

 The wings were done with the Bon Bon Glam and the heart is Bronze Ultra Thick Metallic Embossing Powder. 

I stamped the footprint on the Fragment with Vintage Photo Embossing Powder and heated it. Then I blotted the back of the Fragment with Distressed Ink (Frayed Burlap) then I blotted on some 

 Mustard Seed being sure not to get any of this in the center and after that I put just a touch of the Worn Lipstick around the edges of that then I put a couple of drops of the Blending Solution in the center to give it that sort of watermark effect. 

The two chipboard swirls on the sides were done with the same technique on Tim Holtz's site 12 Tags of 2012 October seen here. Just scroll down to step 16 where he is doing the custom colored rock candy distress stickles dry glitter. (Wow, say that 3 times fast!) 

Happy Halloween Card

Here is a card I did for Card Lifters (Fiskateers). I don't remember where I got the SVG from but I totally love the owl. (Ok, so you got me there....I love cards with any animal/nature on it). It is colored with Copics (I used that for lack of a better term. I really just laid down some color, no blending, no shading, no details except slightly on the owl simply because it is night and you wouldn't see any of that on the plants/trees.)

Fiskars Stamp Press and Hats Off Punch was used in the making of this card. 

I Really Love This Card

Here is another card I did for World Card Making Day on the Fiskateer site. I really love the way this card came out. I think it is one of the prettiest cards I made. It was for another challenge that I entered.

World Card Making Day

I am sure everyone knows by now that yesterday was World Card Making Day. I hope you had time to get a card or two done. I was doing the challenges on the Fiskateer site but there are fifteen of them and two of them are making cards of 4. That is a lot of cards! I thought I would share my cards here since I know some of you are not Fiskateers and can't go see them there.

This was done with Copic Markers and Memento Ink. I used the Fiskars Border Punch "Leaves" and a few rhinestones. I also added gold edging on the red paper.

We had to make a card inspired by our favorite song. Can you guess what my favorite song is? Well, one of my favorite anyways. Truth is, I have many favorite songs but this is one of them. If I had a smart phone I could even get the song as ring tones. (Yes, I still don't have a smart phone. I have a dumb phone.)
